Codorníu Winery
Designed by architect Puig i Cadafalch at the turn of the 20th century, it is a masterpiece of Catalan "Modernist" architecture and a protected monument.
At Codorníu, winemaking is a (documented) century-long tradition though Cava proper was first produced in 1872 after Josep Raventos went to Champagne (France) to learn the technique, which he brought back with him and adapted to the local conditions. with great success!

Half Day Excursion to Codorniu Winery

Welcome to Grapeland...

After a short (20 miles) drive from Barcelona, we shall be right into an important wine–producing region called Penedès, home of winemakers such as Torres, Codorníu and Freixenet.

Of the literally hundreds of wineries in the wine-producing region of Penedès, we have chosen Codorníu because of its oenological importance, as one of the main producers of controlled denomination Cava sparkling wines, and also because of its added architectural and general interest.

After walking through the magnificent gardens of the estate to the Museum —displaying wine–making related antics— and to the production and bottling facilities, we shall go down to the underground galleries, where the second fermentation takes place, in silence and darkness.

The cellars are one of the highlights of the tour.
