Barcelona Barbier-Mueller Museum
of Pre–Columbian Art
Glimpse of a New World
This is an excellent opportunity to see Pre-Columbian art works in Europe. The collections displayed here were gathered by the Swiss businessman Joseph Mueller and his son-in-law Jean-Paul Barbier. They include sculptures, ceramics, fabrics and ritual objects from all the cultures of Meso-America, Central America, Andean America, and the Amazon.
The collection was first lent to the city on occasion of the '92 games and of the fifth centenary of the discovery of America, but knew such a success, it has stayed on. The visit does convey an experience of a "New World" as the rooms are kept in almost complete darkness and only the pieces on display are illuminated, so they seem to be floating in space.
