Barcelona Picasso MuseumMuseu Picasso de BarcelonaThe very first steps of a geniusEarly and even very early works of Picasso are the main interest of the Barcelona Picasso Museum. The Picassos moved to Barcelona in 1895, when Pablo was just 14 years old and he would live here until 1904, when he left for Paris. As you walk through the rooms you see him growing up through his works: childhood sketches and drawings, oil paintings done under his father's guidance at the age of 15 and 16, his first contacts with vanguard styles and artists, his first trip to Paris, in 1900, his difficult coming of age reflected in the cold tones of to the Blue Period. Another main feature of the Museum is the Meninas series: a 44 paintings playful variation on the Meninas by Velazquez; the series, which he painted between August and December 1957, at the age of 76, also comprises 9 paintings with pigeons as a common theme, three landscapes and two portraits: one of Jacqueline and one of a piano player. The location of the Picasso museum is also spectacular: it occupies five medieval mansions along Montcada street, which itself dates back to the 11th C. , when the city first started to grow past the Roman walls. Don't plan a quick visit as when you are done with the Museum, the area around it will captivate you and you will end up spending the rest of the day there.
